Mold is caused by the growth of bacteria and fungi in an indoor place because of too much moisture. Mold increases indoor air pollution and, in some cases, can even cause serious health problems.
The microbes that are the main cause of mold spores developing grow from the small amounts of nutrition they get from dust and dirt. These fungi reproduce quite fast and enter the air in the entire household. Bear in mind that you cannot always see fungi around you, so you will have to invest in a decent mold inspection.
Where does the moisture that feeds the growth of these molds come from? The first source of this can be leaking faucets or flooding in some parts of your house because of rainwater. Even if it is not as extreme a situation as this, moisture can also enter from random air containing water particles. If it is raining or snowing outside your house, entering the house with moisture on your shoes or even just opening your door can be a cause for moisture contributing to the growth of mold.
One way you can reduce or stop the growth of mold is by using proper cleaning materials to prevent or reduce the absorption of moisture. Additionally, make sure that you properly insulate your house to reduce the contribution of moisture again. Another place where moisture accumulates in the windows’ metal frames allows condensation to build up, especially if air-conditioners are being used.
There are three prevalent types of mold, and all of them require an inspection of mold to be properly identified. The first type of mold is Aspergillus. This type of mold is present almost everywhere. People are constantly inhaling this kind of mold in, and it has over 180 species, most of which are quite harmless to humans. However, of these 18-about 40 of them can cause infections in those who have weak immune systems or chronic illnesses.
The second type of mold is the common Cladosporium and grows in grout lines, subfloors, and sheetrock. Intensive care units in hospitals disallow the cutting of flowers as this can result in mold growth as the plant matter starts decaying. The spores released by the mold can be a cause of concern, especially for critically ill patients. Cladosporium is a type of black mold, and regular individuals affected by this can be affected by hay fever, upper respiratory problems, or asthma.
The third type of mold and the most dangerous is the Stachybotrys Chartarum, which is considered toxigenic. While it is capable of producing toxins, it doesn’t need to do so in every instance. There are unusual symptoms in addition to the usual symptoms seen with mold growth. This includes an unexplained link between lung hemorrhaging in infants exposed to this type of mold. Already unwell, people may also develop pneumonia.
If there is even a slight suspicion regarding mold, one must investigate properly with a full mold inspection. This may include thermal imaging as well as the taking of topical samples to be tested. In addition to mold samples, samples of the air should also be taken. In the case of employing a company to do this inspection, clients should request a written report of findings and the recommended remedies. If you’re looking to buy a new home, make sure a proper mold inspection has been conducted. In renting a new home, make sure that the owners and not the occupants are responsible for any mold developments and their effects.
